Welcome to YOUR Wedding section.

When it come to the most special day of your life, we like to make a personal effort to make it all that it can be.

Entertainment – Getting it right!!

When it comes to booking entertainment for your wedding, there are many factors to consider. Contained in this editorial are some of the most important factors that are notoriously being over looked, as the entertainment is one of the most important aspects of the whole day and should be included in the planning from the very start.

Many brides have spent hours putting the finishing touches to their hand made invitations, making sure the shades of pink match buttonholes, cake & bridesmaid dresses, but the entertainment has only had a few minutes spent on it with a short glance through the big yellow book or a quick search on Google’s “DJ’s for Hire”.

Selecting the right entertainment is paramount to the success of the whole day. I mean, who wants to hear cringe worthy tunes, played or sung by the act you’ve booked? Not you and certainly not your guests. You want to stand back on your wedding day to see smiles & enjoyment being had by all.

A misguided choice of entertainment can turn your dream wedding into a wedding from hell.

Getting it right.
There is no secret how to get it right, it’s just a very fine balance of understanding what you want & your requirements & being thoughtful of what will appeal to your guests to entice them onto the dance floor with you.

So, for a moment, let’s forget the buttonholes & balloons & put your heads together on this so important factor.

The Basic’s.

The Disco.
The DJ has a crucial role to play in the success of any party. Not only must he/she endure endless demands for “oops up side your head” from booze fuelled relatives, but he, or she, is responsible for directing the pace of the party and playing the right songs at the right time. Not all DJ’s are what they seem however, many a Cowboy DJ have been responsible for wrecking a wedding party. Meet with them face to face, perhaps go along to see them work at one of their parties, before you enter into any agreements with them. Cheaper is not always better & be sure to outline exactly what you require them to do for you. Speak to your DJ and tell him/her the styles of music that you want them to play that will appeal to your guests. Alternatively,  you can ask your guests to suggest their favourite tracks when they reply to your invitation. This you can the pass to your DJ for him/her to include in his set.

If you have booked a live band or a live act, I would suggest it would be worth you hiring a DJ also. Many bands can provide a Disco as such, but unless they state “Professional DJ provided” I would opt out of this service as a professional DJ can act as Host & Compere and will also be on hand to play between the bands sets.

The Band

If you have the budget to stretch to a live band then there is nothing better to stir up a dancing frenzy than hearing one contagious song after another played live. Be sure to pick a band that not only covers the music that you like, but remember to be thoughtful of other too. Be sure the band knows when they are required to arrive, set up & to start, again, perhaps go along to see them perform first before booking them. Most professional working bands will have information to hand that they can give you including references. Don’t be afraid to “Interview” bands. After all, they will be working for you for the night so their “CV” as it were should contain relevant information for them to get the “Job”. Also consider the wedding reception venue before booking the band. Will the band fit in the space? Does the venue have stage lights? Will the band provide them? There is no point booking a fantastic band if no one can see them. Choose wisely.

Live Acts

When booking Live Acts it is essential that you consider the style of the Act. Many people categorize Live Acts merely as Singers or vocalists, but there are many types. I have listed the two main types to show you the difference.

There are the “Singers” – Fantastic voices, a pleasure to watch & listen to. Ideal for drinks receptions or even during the ceremony or the signing of the register.

“The Entertainers” – These Live Acts can really perform, they have stage presence, charisma, charm, wit  – everything you will need to bring your wedding party alive. Included in this category are Comedians, duos, trios, solos etc.

Be sure to pick the right act for the right time of the day. A “Singer” for the day perhaps?  Or an “Entertainer” for the evening party? Live Acts mostly use backing music – a great alternative if you budget will not stretch to the infamous live band. Again, there are many genres of music that singers & entertainers can cover, be sure to pick the one that compliments your day.

Booking Acts can sometimes be daunting if you’ve never heard or seem them before. Ask the venue if they can recommend Acts that they have seen, ask your wedding planner, if you have one or contact an entertainment consultant who will be happy to help you find the right act for you.

Make it Unique

There are many types of entertainment available for you to have during your wedding day & more frequently, couples are choosing entertainment to convey their appreciation to their guests. There is nothing wrong with traditional offerings such as Favours & Gifts, there’s nothing more I like than munching on sugared almonds, but of late I’ve enjoyed attending weddings where the Bride & Groom have put their personal touch to it, making it just as special for the guests as it is for them. Often over looked is the part of the day between the end of the meal or speeches, just before the evening guests fill the bar. This is a perfect opportunity to show our appreciation to the guests that have attended the ceremony & the reception.

Food for thought.

Finally, we come to the end. I’ve listed a few more ideas for you to consider. These acts can help to keep the day flowing, can add a special little something or are a wonderful addition to any wedding event. Thank you for Reading.

Casino Tables – a wonderful pastime without breaking the bank. Ask about printing your own personalized “Fun Money”.

Close up/table Magician – A mind boggling & personal act where he/she performs close up to individuals or small groups.

The Harp – The melodic sounds of the Harp. Captivating &enchanting.

The Caricaturist – A “Cartoon Artist” that will capture your guests forever. A keepsake for each of your guests & the results are hilarious.

Fireworks – A perfect end to perfect day. How better to tell the world of your union. Finish the day of with a bang.

The Piper – Bagpipes are often considered a Scottish tradition but this is not the case. Pipers can be used to “Announce the Bride’s arrival” or for light entertainment at the reception.

The Chimney Sweep – Have your wedding processing lead by a traditional Chimney sweep. Its considered lucky for a bride to see a chimney sweep on her wedding day.
